Oil prices drop 1.8% amid U.S.-Iran diplomatic hopes

Key Takeaways

  • •Oil prices dropped due to hopes for US-Iran diplomacy
  • •Increased attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz raise tensions
  • •US crude may become more attractive due to Russian fleet exemption
  • •US oil stocks expected to have decreased, affecting market dynamics

Oil prices took a hit on Tuesday. Traders were keeping an eye on possible diplomatic progress between the United States and Iran. The hope was that tensions might ease. But on the ground, the reality was different. The region saw more hostilities, including attacks on tankers and strikes targeting Saudi Arabia.

U. S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures for November dropped noticeably. They fell 1.8%, ending the day at $101.79 per barrel. This marked a significant drop from an earlier session high of $110.48. The November contract expired on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the December contract didn't escape unscathed, falling by 26 cents to settle at $98.28 per barrel. Over on the Brent side, December futures slipped 0.7% to $108.79 per barrel, down from a peak of $111.99 earlier in the session.

The past few weeks have been tense. Attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated. At least 18 ships have been targeted in the last two weeks, according to ship tracker Kpler. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps said two oil tankers had been set ablaze after hitting mines laid by its naval unit, according to Iranian state-affiliated news agency Tasnim.

In the midst of these tensions, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei issued a warning. Tehran, he said, would respond to any U. S. military action with equal or greater force. This warning came after reports that U. S. President Donald Trump said American forces would not attack Iran before the midterm elections on November 3.

Market Dynamics and Expert Insights

Analyst Tamas Varga at PVM Oil Associates shed light on the market. He pointed out the tightness in global crude oil markets, noting the strong performance of front-end WTI ahead of contract expiry. This strength, he said, was due to declining export volumes from the Middle East, a result of increased tanker attacks and Houthi strikes on Saudi oil infrastructure.

Varga also noted the U. S. decision to exempt the Russian shadow fleet from sanctions. This could potentially lower freight rates, removing a barrier to increased demand for U. S.-sourced crude. It might make U. S. crude oil grades more attractive as substitutes for Middle Eastern crude. Moreover, U. S. commercial oil stocks are expected to have decreased in the past week, further influencing the market dynamics.
